Canadian Boxers The Nineties

Introduction of the Nineties:  By Brian Zelley

As I look back to the past for Canadian amateur bocing, the stage
was set in 1984 to 1988 with some excellent boxers and results
on an International basis  with Olympic medals and numerous
tournaments around the globe.  In many ways the highlite
period in the nineties could be the 1992 to 1996 time period,
but Canadian boxers even performed at the Goodwill Games
in Seattle in 1990.

Some of the background to the Nineties:

The above link includes some of the tournament from Canada Games to Olympic
games and Commonwealth Games activity and introduces us to a series of names
from Domenic Filane Figliomeni  to Vernon Linklater, and may more with one of
the most active as a top Canadian senior boxer between 1990 to 1999 being
Michael Strange.   But there would be many other names along the journey
such as Billy Irwin, Marc Leduc, Greg Johnson, and Scott MacIntosh.

Mid-way through the Nineties there would be the 1994 Commonwealth Games
in Victoria.  And, the team would include British Columbia's own
Allan Bayne and Alberta's Dale Brown.  But, there would also be some

background data regarding the folks that were involved in the planning and
process from 1989 to 1994.

Allan Bayne, boxer of the Nineties

Wald Fleming, one of the many boxers
that were part of the boxing scene in the '90's
*Wald Fleming would be one of the members of the 1994 Canadian
boxing team that would compete in the Commonwealth Games
held in Greater Victoria, British Columbia.  Wald would earn a
bronze medal in the welterweight division.
